Our First Aid for Motorcyclists course is a one-day, hands-on course for riders in Milton Keynes and the surrounding counties. It leads to the ProTrainings First Aid for Motorcyclists Level 3 (VTQ) certificate, valid for three years, and covers what you need to do if you’re first on the scene of a bike crash: making the scene safe, CPR, serious bleeding, spinal injuries and how to remove a helmet safely.

See our prices for on-site group training. No VAT, and travel included within 60 miles.

If you ride, you’re more likely than most to be first to reach a rider who’s come off, often on a quiet road where an ambulance will take a while. Standard first aid courses don’t cover helmets, leathers or the risks of working at the side of a road. This one does.

What the course covers

Most of the day is practical. You’ll practice on manikins and with real helmets, because helmet removal in particular is something you need to have done with your hands, not just read about.

Training for bike clubs and riding groups

The course works especially well for clubs, riding groups and friends who ride together. If several of you have done the same training, there’s a much better chance someone on every ride knows what to do, and you can practice the scenarios together.

For your club, dealership or riding group, a course at your premises or club venue costs £450 for up to 6 riders, then £50 for each extra rider, up to 12. A full group of 12 comes to £750, which works out at £62.50 each. Certificates are included, there’s no VAT to add, and travel is included within 60 miles of Milton Keynes. Weekend courses are no problem with a bit of notice. Just get in touch with your numbers and roughly when you’d like to train.

Who runs the course

The course is delivered by Stewart Hansen, founder and principal instructor at Vital Signs First. Stewart has six years of front-line military experience, was originally trained by St John Ambulance, and has been the on-site first aider wherever he has worked since. He now delivers accredited first aid training across Milton Keynes and the surrounding counties as a ProTrainings provider.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any first aid experience?

No. The course starts from the basics, and it’s just as useful for experienced riders who have never done first aid as for those refreshing what they learned years ago.

Should you take a rider’s helmet off after a crash?

Not usually. Leave it on unless the rider isn’t breathing normally and you can’t manage their airway with it in place. If it has to come off, it’s a two-person job, and it’s one of the main skills you’ll practice on the course.

How long does the certificate last?

Three years. Many riders like to refresh their skills sooner, as practical skills fade if you don’t use them.

Can you run the course at a weekend?

Yes, with a bit of planning. Most riders work during the week, so weekend courses are often the easiest option. Give us some notice and we’ll find a date that works.

Can you run the course for our bike club?

Yes. We run group sessions for clubs and riding groups of up to 12, including at weekends. It costs £450 for up to 6 riders, then £50 for each extra rider, so a full group of 12 is £750. Get in touch with your numbers and preferred dates.

Is this the same as a Biker Down course?

No. Biker Down is a free awareness session run by some fire and rescue services. This is a full day of hands-on training that leads to a recognised Level 3 qualification, valid for three years.
